Kennedy Thompson Named GSC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Gulf South Conference announced its Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Awards for performances during March 30 to April 5.
Kennedy Thompson, a junior at Mississippi College, was named GSC Field Athlete of the Week. She competed in the hammer throw and discus at the Southern Miss Invitational, finishing sixth in the hammer with a personal-best throw of 48.60 meters. She also threw 40.69 meters in the discus. Thompson now leads the GSC in the hammer throw, according to conference officials.
Other athletes recognized include Tamsyn Gibbs of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, who was named Track Athlete of the Week. Gibbs set a personal-best and school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Mike Fanelli Classic, finishing third among Division I competitors with an NCAA provisional time of 10:45.49. She is now second in the GSC and 10th nationally in Division II for the event.
J’Da Williams of West Alabama earned Freshman of the Week honors. She posted first and second-place finishes at the UWG Legends Meet, winning the 100 meters in 11.76 seconds and finishing second in the 200 meters with a time of 24.71 seconds. Williams ranks first in the GSC in the 100 meters and second in the 200 meters.
The conference has announced weekly award winners throughout the season, with past recipients including athletes from Mississippi College, West Alabama, UAH, and other institutions.
