Jones splits MACCC doubleheader at Southwest, wins game one
SUMMIT, Miss. — Sixth-ranked Jones split its third MACCC doubleheader in four attempts Tuesday night, defeating Southwest 2-1 in the first game before losing 17-9 in six innings in the second.
The Bobcats moved to 28-7 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Southwest stands at 20-5 overall and 6-2 in MACCC action.
In game one, Madison Sawyer pitched her second consecutive two-hit game, earning her 12th win of the season. Annaston Tate drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the sixth. Mary Kimble Price opened the scoring for Jones with a home run in the first inning. Southwest tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball with two outs.
Jones regained the lead two batters into the sixth when Sawyer doubled and scored on a single by Tate. The Bears threatened in the seventh, putting the tying run on base with two outs, but Sawyer induced a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Madison Sawyer improved to 12-1 in the circle, while Southwest’s Allie Ladnier fell to 7-3. The Bobcats return home Saturday for a doubleheader against Holmes at 2 p.m.
