Jones College Tops Mississippi Gulf Coast in Key MACCC Tennis Match
ELLISVILLE, Miss. — Jones College’s men’s tennis team secured a 6-3 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
The Bobcats, ranked 13th nationally, improved their record to 11-0 overall and 6-0 in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference. Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Jones has now won eight of the last nine matches against the Bulldogs, according to school officials.
Jones opened the match with a strong showing in doubles, winning two of three matches. Tom Garrett from Australia and Juan Francisco Pereyra from Argentina defeated Angel Hernandez and Santiago Enriquez 8-6 in No. 1 doubles. Ridge Jones of Northeast Jones and Ryan Roth of Resurrection Catholic beat Ryland Buford and Connor Hartfield 8-2 in No. 3 doubles. Felipe Morales from Ecuador and Reese Touchet from Madison Central lost 8-3 to Jan Bako and Warren Hudson in No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Pereyra edged Hernandez 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. Morales defeated Enriquez 6-3, 6-2 in No. 3 singles, while Jones beat Buford 6-3, 6-3 in No. 4 singles. Westmoreland rallied after losing the first set to beat Hudson 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 in No. 5 singles. Garrett was defeated by Bako 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 in No. 2 singles, and Roth lost to Nick Dulaney 6-3, 6-2 in No. 6 singles.
The Bobcats are scheduled to host No. 11 Coastal Alabama-South at 1 p.m. Thursday. They will not play again in the conference until after spring break, facing Holmes on March 24.
