Jones College Baseball Eyes Contention in 2026 Season

ELLISVILLE, Miss. — Jones College baseball enters the 2026 season with high hopes, according to head coach Wes Thigpen. The Bobcats aim to contend for MACCC and Region 23 championships this spring, Thigpen said, citing a talented roster and strong team leadership.

Thigpen, in his fourth season leading Jones, has guided the team to a 141-65 record. He noted the team’s depth on both sides of the ball and highlighted the leadership of returning players. “We have had a few good scrimmages this spring, still trying to make sure we put the guys in the right roles and positions to be the most successful,” he said.

Only a few players from last year’s squad, which finished 35-15 and was runner-up in the MACCC before advancing to the region playoffs, remain as starters. Key returnees include Talan Theriot, Chase Russell, Colton Smith, Josh Lee and Caden Freeman. Thigpen praised Theriot’s leadership and versatility, noting his move from third base to shortstop. He also highlighted Russell’s role in the outfield and on the mound, along with Smith’s development of a changeup to better handle left-handed hitters.

Jones lost several standouts from last year but expects contributions from incoming freshmen and transfers. Notable newcomers include pitcher/infielder Brayson Graham, regarded as a top 100 prospect by Prep Baseball Report, as well as Dylan Champagne, Gage Thompson, Warren Hutchinson, Sanders Ainsworth, and transfer Trevor Hodges. Thigpen expressed confidence in the new talent, emphasizing their readiness to make an impact.

In the infield, Jones will look to freshmen Brayden Quick and Owen Bellanger behind the plate, with Russell, Sam Oakley, Graham, and Walker Long competing at first base. The team also has options at second base, including freshmen Kelan Guidry and Eli Wheat, as well as sophomore Dakota Smith. Talan Theriot will serve as the starting shortstop, while Champagne, Ainsworth, and Smith will rotate at third base based on game situations.

Thigpen pointed out that Pearl River and East Central are expected to be top contenders in the MACCC. He praised the league’s competitiveness, noting that any team can beat any other on any given day. The coaching staff includes Jonathan Parker, Trey Harrington, and Reece Ewing, each bringing extensive experience to the team.

Jones opens its season Jan. 28 at Coastal Alabama-North. The Bobcats’ home debut is scheduled for Feb. 2, with a doubleheader against East Central at 2 p.m.
