Johnson’s 10th-inning homer lifts Owls over Spalding 7-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Zach Johnson hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning, lifting The W to a 7-5 win over Spalding in a Saturday afternoon game at Derby City Field. The victory gave the Owls (14-10, 7-2 SLIAC) the series win against the Golden Eagles (14-8, 9-2 SLIAC).

Spalding threatened early, loading the bases in the first inning. Chase Marshall delivered a single to drive in a run, but the Owls limited further damage. In the bottom of the first, the Golden Eagles scored a run to tie the game at 1-1.

The Golden Eagles added single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead. The Owls responded in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Zack Egan was hit by a pitch to bring home a run, and the inning ended with MUW leading 5-3 after a wild sequence of walks and a passed ball.

Robby Canten, who pitched from the fifth inning onward, kept the Owls in the game, retiring several batters in relief. Will Carter entered in the eighth, and after a triple tied the game at 5-5, the game moved into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, Matthew Windham singled and was sacrificed to second. Johnson then launched a game-winning homer to left field, his fifth of the season. Carter closed out the bottom of the inning scoreless to earn his fifth win of the season, improving to 5-0.

Johnson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Windham went 2-for-6 and scored twice. Brack added two hits in five at-bats, with a walk and a run. The Owls now prepare to host Webster University in a three-game series Friday and Saturday at CCA Field.
