Jackson State Women’s Basketball Edges Alcorn State in Overtime
Jackson, Miss. — Jaileyah Cotton scored the go-ahead basket with 1:23 remaining in overtime, helping Jackson State secure a 52-49 road win over Alcorn State on Saturday. Cotton finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds, both team highs.
Pierre-Noelle Tchehchoua contributed a double-double off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards that led to second-chance points for the Tigers. Mikayla Brown added 11 points for Jackson State, which forced 20 turnovers by Alcorn State and converted them into 16 points.
Jackson State held a halftime lead of 24-19 but fell behind 33-29 after the third quarter. The Tigers responded with a 5-0 run to take a 34-33 lead with 49 seconds remaining in the third, and maintained a narrow lead through the fourth quarter. The game was tied 42-42 at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.
In the extra period, Jackson State took an 8-0 run to go up 50-44 with 11 seconds left. Although Alcorn State trimmed the margin, the Tigers held on for a 52-49 victory. Jackson State’s defense limited the Braves to 28.6% shooting from the field and 13% from three-point range.
Jackson State (9-17, 7-7 SWAC) will visit Prairie View in their next game Thursday at 6 p.m.
