Jackson State Women’s Basketball Defense Shuts Down Florida A&M in 60-52 Win

Jackson, Miss. — The Jackson State women’s basketball team secured a 60-52 win over Florida A&M on Saturday, fueled by a strong defensive effort that limited the Rattlers to 16.7% shooting from three-point range, according to the school.

The Tigers’ defense also held Florida A&M to 36.8% from the field overall. Jackson State out-rebounded the Rattlers 38-37, with Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua grabbing a team-high eight boards. The Tigers also scored 10 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.

Jaileyah Cotton led Jackson State with 21 points, while Jada Patton contributed nine points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Tcheuhchoua added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench. The Lady Tigers forced 21 turnovers, converting those into 23 points.

After falling behind 12-9 early in the game, Jackson State went on an 8-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 17-12 lead. The Tigers maintained a 17-15 edge at the quarter break. They struggled to hold onto their lead in the second quarter, trailing 32-27 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Jackson State cut its deficit to 36-32 and then took a 39-36 lead with 2:57 remaining following a three from Cotton. Florida A&M responded to tie the game at 42-42 heading into the final period. In the fourth, the Tigers knocked down two three-pointers and used an 8-0 run to seal the victory, finishing with a 60-52 score with 16 seconds remaining.

The team will next face Alcorn State in Lorman on Saturday at 1 p.m.
