Jackson State Swept by Mississippi Valley State and UNC Asheville in Saturday Doubleheader

Jackson, Miss. — Jackson State suffered a pair of losses Saturday at Braddy Field, dropping a 14-8 decision to Mississippi Valley State and a 7-1 game to UNC Asheville, according to team sources.

In the opener, Pierre Cabral led Jackson State at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Four other Tigers collected two hits each, including Robert Tate Jr., who finished 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, and a triple. Tyree Reed also went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. had two hits, including a triple and two RBIs. Tyshon Patty added two hits, including a double and two RBIs.

Jackson State’s pitching staff struggled, with Talmadge Davis taking the loss after allowing five runs on one hit in just 0.1 innings. Trae Burton started and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Shemar Harris recorded the final out of the ninth inning.

In the nightcap, Reed and Troy Wilson Jr. each had two hits for Jackson State, now 6-6 on the season. Reed went 2-for-4, and Wilson finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Derek Arrocha was the losing pitcher, working 5.2 innings and giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts. Joe Williams and Darius Dampier combined for 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits.

Mississippi Valley State took an early lead in the first inning with an RBI groundout by Eric Williams. Jackson State responded with a big second inning, highlighted by Hudson’s triple and Patty’s double, taking a 6-1 lead. The Tigers extended their lead in the fourth and fifth innings but saw MVSU rally in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the win, highlighted by a nine-run ninth inning that included multiple walks and hits, leading to a final score of 14-8.

In game two, UNC Asheville jumped ahead in the third inning with a run scored on a failed pickoff attempt. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fourth and took control with a five-run sixth inning, including a home run by Jake Minarik. The Bulldogs’ pitching held Jackson State to one run, and UNC Asheville secured the 7-1 victory.

The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday at 11 a.m. in the final game of the weekend series. Jackson State looks to rebound after the losses, which come amid a busy schedule highlighted by recent doubleheaders and tournament play, according to team updates.
