Jackson State Sweeps Mississippi Valley State in Softball Doubleheader

Jackson State University softball swept Mississippi Valley State University in a doubleheader Saturday at JSU Softball Field. The Tigers won the first game 9-6 and took the second game 18-4 in five innings.

In the opener, Mississippi Valley State made a late rally but fell short. Madison Wesley led the Diamond Devils with a solo home run, their only extra-base hit of the game. Sheridan Kynard and several other players posted multiple hits, but the team couldn’t overcome Jackson State’s offense.

Devyn Dotson made her second start of the season in the second game, which Jackson State dominated. The Tigers built a commanding lead early and maintained it. Jamiyah Gary and Ashtyn Clark each went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Kynard and Taniya Partee also contributed offensively. Madison Bruce, who did not pitch, added an RBI, and Taylor Fuller drew the team’s only walk and scored a run.

Mississippi Valley State, now 1-24 overall and 0-12 in SWAC play, remains seeking its first conference win. Jackson State, 17-14 overall and 9-2 in SWAC, extended its winning streak to 26 games against the Diamond Devils, last beating them April 27, 2019.

The teams will meet again at 3 p.m. Friday when Mississippi Valley State hosts Bethune-Cookman. The Diamond Devils continue their homestand in the Magnolia State.
