Jackson State Splits Doubleheader at HBCU Softball Classic
Montgomery, Ala. — Jackson State’s softball team split its Saturday doubleheader at the HBCU Softball Classic. The Tigers lost to South Carolina State before defeating Alcorn State in walk-off fashion.
In the first game, Jackson State fell 7-4 to South Carolina State. Jhordyn Dyer went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Brooklyn Morris took the loss, pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing three runs. Trailing 4-0, Jackson State scored four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Dyer’s two-run single. South Carolina State added three runs in the final inning to seal the win.
Jackson State’s offense produced a season-high six hits, with Dyer leading at the plate. South Carolina State’s L. Morlu went 3 for 3 with three RBIs. A. Dent pitched seven innings for the Bulldogs, allowing four runs.
In the second game, Jackson State rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Alcorn State 5-3. Meah Almaraz highlighted the Tigers’ offense with a three-run walk-off homer in the seventh inning. Addison Jennings earned the win in relief, throwing three hitless innings.
The Tigers scored two runs in the fifth inning and three in the seventh. Almaraz finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Jackson State out-hit Alcorn State 11-5 and limited the Braves to a .111 average with runners in scoring position. Y. Acevedo led Alcorn State offensively, going 1 for 3 with a double.
Jackson State will wrap up its participation in the HBCU Softball Classic with games against Bluefield State at 10 a.m. and Claflin at 3 p.m., according to team officials.
