Jackson State softball rallies for 18-9 win over Alabama A&M in Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Jackson State’s softball team rallied from an eighth-inning tie to beat Alabama A&M 18-9 Friday afternoon on the road. Brooklyn Morris earned the win for Jackson State, pitching three innings and allowing one run on six hits, according to team reports.
The Tigers (10-11, 2-2 SWAC) jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Their offense kept clicking, with six runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jace Jackson and a two-run flyout by Kristina Carlson. Alabama A&M (13-15, 0-4 SWAC) responded with three runs of its own, trimming the deficit to 6-3 before Jackson State extended its lead to 8-3 in the third inning.
The Bulldogs then rallied, tying the game at eight in the sixth inning. Jackson State responded strongly in the seventh, scoring 10 runs to take an 18-8 lead. The inning included a two-run double from Mackenzie Barney and a two-run single from Nakayla Williams. Alabama A&M scored once in the final inning, but the Tigers held on for the 18-9 victory.
Jackson State finished with 20 hits, 18 runs, 15 RBIs and one error. Jorgina Gant struck out six Bulldogs hitters. Barney led the Tigers with two extra-base hits and drove in four runs. The Tigers’ most productive inning was the seventh, when they scored 10 runs. Jackson State maintained the lead from the first inning onward, never surrendering it after taking a 6-2 advantage in the opening frame.
Six Tigers had multiple hits, and the team out-hit Alabama A&M 20-14. Jackson State batted .609 (14-for-23) with runners in scoring position. The pitchers faced 39 Bulldogs hitters, striking out six and allowing three ground balls and 12 fly balls. Jackson State’s offense was led by a perfect 5-for-5 performance, including a home run and four RBIs by a player not named. Offensively for Alabama A&M, Kali Austerman went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run and an RBI.
