Jackson State Falls to Southern in SWAC Quarterfinals
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Jackson State’s women’s basketball team was eliminated from the Southwestern Athletics Conference tournament Thursday with a 64-51 loss to Southern at The Gateway Center Arena.
The Tigers (12-19) out-rebounded the Jaguars 36-32 but struggled offensively early, trailing 18-7 after the first quarter. Jackson State continued to face a sizable deficit, going into halftime down 38-16.
Southern extended its lead to 40-16 early in the third quarter before Jackson State mounted a rally. The Tigers used a 10-0 run to cut the gap to 40-26 with 6:23 remaining in the period. Despite the surge, Southern pushed its advantage to 53-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Jackson State capitalized on three Southern turnovers, scoring six points off those mistakes. The Jaguars maintained their lead, which grew to 64-44 before the Tigers closed the game with a 7-0 run, making the final score 64-51 with 48 seconds remaining.
Jackson State shot 37.9 percent from the field and shared the ball well, with assist on 85 percent of its made baskets. Derrica McCall led the Tigers with 12 points, while Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua and Mikayla Brown each grabbed seven rebounds. The Tigers also forced 13 turnovers and scored 13 points off those miscues.
Despite the loss, Jackson State’s effort included a strong rebounding performance and disciplined defense. The team now shifts focus to next season’s efforts.
