Jackson State Falls to Grambling State in Series Opener 12-9

Grambling, La. — Jackson State fell to Grambling State 12-9 Thursday night in the opening game of their SWAC series at Willis Reed Field. The Tigers (13-17, 4-6 SWAC) jumped out early with three runs in the first inning but couldn’t hold on, dropping their third consecutive conference game.

Jackson State took an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Tyshon Patty, Robert Tate Jr., and Hederick Torres contributed to the effort, with Tate going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Grambling State responded with a five-run inning in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Charles Ashe III’s two-run homer and Julio Vasquez’s solo shot to take a 5-3 lead.

The teams traded runs throughout the game, with Jackson State rallying late. Tyree Reed hit a two-run homer in the eighth to cut the deficit to 10-8. In the ninth, Diego Melendez homered for Jackson State, bringing the score to 12-9 but not enough to tie the game. Trae Burton took the loss in relief, pitching five innings after starter Talmadge Davis.

Grambling State’s offense was led by Ashe, Vasquez, and Chris Marcellus, who each contributed RBIs. The series continues Friday at 3 p.m., with Jackson State seeking to even the series.
