Jackson State edges Florida A&M 5-4 in 11 innings to open SWAC series
Jackson State defeated Florida A&M 5-4 in 11 innings Friday night at Braddy Field, winning the first game of their Southwestern Athletic Conference series. Diego Melendez delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the 11th to secure the victory, according to the school.
The Tigers led 1-0 until the eighth inning when Florida A&M tied the game at 1-1. The Rattlers then scored three runs in the top of the 11th to take a 4-1 lead. Jackson State responded in the bottom half with a rally led by Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr., who singled to score two runs and cut the deficit to 4-3.
Melendez then singled through the right side, driving in two more runs and giving the Tigers a 5-4 victory. Melendez finished 3-for-6 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Tyree Reed went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Kade Walker earned the win in relief, working the final two innings for Jackson State.
The teams continue the series Saturday at 3 p.m. at Braddy Field. The game will be streamed on SWAC TV, according to the schools.
