Jackson State beats UNC Asheville 6-5 to close weekend series

Jackson State defeated UNC Asheville 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Braddy Field, closing out a weekend series with its second win. The Tigers improved to 7-6 overall, thanks in part to a five-run fifth inning that put them ahead for good, according to team reports.

Jackson State pounded out 10 hits, led by Ledy Alvarez, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk. Pierre Cabral finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Tyree Reed contributed two RBIs for the Tigers, who held off a late rally by UNC Asheville.

Jayden Lopez earned the win in his start, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out five. Christian Delgado pitched two innings of relief, allowing three hits and recording two strikeouts. Darius Damper earned his first save of the season, working the final 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout, team officials said.

UNC Asheville took an early lead with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Patrick Gillen. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0 before Jackson State responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Tigers then surged ahead with a five-run fifth inning, including key RBIs from Troy Wilson Jr., Reed, and Alvarez.

In the sixth, UNC Asheville scored twice on a double by Zeb Swangim, narrowing the gap to 6-5. Jackson State will now begin a nine-game road trip at New Orleans on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., with the game broadcast on ESPN+.
