Hinds Track & Field Excels at Samford Bulldog Open
The Hinds Community College track and field team highlighted its season with a strong performance at the Samford Bulldog Open at Birmingham CrossPlex, earning several event victories and setting personal and national marks, according to the school.
Standout sprinter Jayval Wright, a sophomore, won the men’s 200 meters with an indoor personal best of 20.75 seconds. The time ranks No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Wright also clocked 6.54 seconds in the men’s 60 meters, matching his season best.
Curtis Coleman, another sprinter, posted a personal-best 6.64 seconds in the men’s 60 meters, tying for first and contributing to Hinds’ national standing. On the women’s side, Queen Usunobun dominated in the sprints, winning the 200 meters in 24.39 seconds and the 400 meters in 54.42 seconds. Her 400-meter time is the fastest in the NJCAA this season.
Caneilia Hope continued her success with a personal-best 7.46 seconds in the women’s 60 meters, ranking among the NJCAA’s top performers. Freshman Angel Cuberbatch set a personal best with 55.76 seconds in the women’s 400 meters. In the men’s 400 meters, Deshuan Gordan finished second with a personal-best 48.03 seconds, followed by Craig Carson at 48.68 seconds and Nathanael Abrahams at 49.75 seconds, all personal records.
In hurdles competition, Mikenzey Hodges-Woods placed third in the women’s 60-meter hurdles final with a personal-best 8.82 seconds. In field events, Demetrius Taite marked 14.62 meters (47 feet, 11.75 inches) in the men’s triple jump, placing ninth nationally in the NJCAA, also a personal best.
Overall, Hinds set 11 personal records and achieved multiple NJCAA top-10 and leading performances. Head coach Reginald Dillon credited the team’s recent hard work and good weather for their success. Dillon said, “They brought that attitude and commitment to the track, and it showed in their performances.” The team will conclude the indoor regular season Feb. 20 at LSU and prepare for the NJCAA Indoor Championships March 6-7 at Washburn University.
