Hinds Softball Sweeps Spring Break Series, Improves to 5-1 in MACCC

RAYMOND, Miss. — The Hinds Community College softball team swept four games during Spring Break, winning two MACCC series against Mississippi Gulf Coast and Coahoma. The Eagles improved to 22-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Hinds opened the week with two wins on the road at Perkinston, defeating Mississippi Gulf Coast. In Game 1, the Eagles rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to win 5-3. Aubrie Carter hit her first home run of the season in the fourth inning and later drove in another run in the seventh. Freshman pitcher Claire Mellard went the distance, allowing three runs on two hits and earning the win.

Game 2 saw a back-and-forth contest that Hinds ultimately won 5-2. Carter contributed an RBI single in the first inning, and Mackenzie Smith added an RBI single in the sixth to put the Eagles ahead. Emma Hudson capped the scoring with a two-run homer. Abby McLean pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out three for her fourth win of the season.

Back at home Saturday, Hinds celebrated Sophomore Day with a decisive 9-1 run-rule victory over Coahoma in five innings. Eight of nine starters recorded hits, led by Aaliyah Nixon’s perfect 3-for-3 performance. Jazmin Robertson threw a five-inning no-hitter, striking out three for her third win.

The Eagles continued their offensive display in Game 2 against Coahoma, scoring four early runs and never trailing. Nixon, Jada Ellis, and Jalia McDaniel each had multiple hits. Mattie Gibson earned her fourth win, allowing three hits over four innings. Laicie Bridges finished the game in the fifth inning, allowing just one base runner.

Hinds is set to return Wednesday for a top-20 NJCAA matchup with Copiah-Lincoln at Rene T. Warren Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The team encourages fans to follow @HindsAthletics on Twitter and Instagram and like their Facebook page for updates.
