Gunner Staten Named CCS Pitcher of the Week

Atlanta, Georgia — Belhaven University sophomore left-hander Gunner Staten has been named the Collegiate Conference of the South Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is his first career CCS Pitcher of the Week award.

Staten played a key role in Belhaven’s series sweep of No. 25 East Texas Baptist at Trustmark Park. He earned the win in Saturday’s first game by pitching five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out five. His performance kept the nationally ranked Tigers off the board.

The Kentwood, Louisiana, native worked around a leadoff walk in the first inning and stranded a runner in scoring position in the third. In the fourth, he navigated traffic after a two-out walk and induced a flyout to preserve the shutout. He retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced before handing the ball to the bullpen with a 2-0 lead.

Belhaven went on to win 3-1 and completed the sweep with a 10-0 shutout in the second game. Over the three-game series, the Blazers limited East Texas Baptist to four total runs while outscoring the Tigers 19-4.
