Florida A&M Holds Off Alcorn State for 86-78 Win

Lorman, Miss. — Florida A&M overcame a late rally by Alcorn State to earn an 86-78 victory Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

The Rattlers (10-14, 7-6 SWAC) led throughout the contest, building as much as a 26-point lead in the second half. Despite a strong second-half effort from the Braves (6-19, 5-8), FAMU held on to secure the win.

Five players scored in double figures for Alcorn, led by Jameel Morris with 15 points. Nick Woodard added 14, Shane Lancaster 13, Tycen McDaniels 11, and Bryson Calamese 10. Calamese went perfect from the free-throw line, making all six attempts. Morris also contributed a team-high seven assists and shot 6-for-7 from the field.

In the second half, Alcorn cut the deficit to 80-72 with under a minute remaining after a late scoring run. Morris scored 13 of his points in the second half, and Lancaster added 10 of his 13 in the final 20 minutes. The Braves shot 51.4% in the second half and made 87% of their free throws overall.

Florida A&M was led by Jaquan Sanders with 17 points. Tyler Washington scored 15, Tyler Shirley 13, Jordan Chatman 12, and Antonio Baker 11. The Rattlers made 8 of 10 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

FAMU coach Charlie Ward’s team opened the game with a 6-for-6 three-point shooting effort in the first half. The Rattlers built their lead with a 16-4 run early in the second half, which pushed their advantage to 55-33. Despite the late rally by Alcorn, Florida A&M maintained control to improve their conference record.
