Faulkner tops William Carey in high-scoring road game
Montgomery, Alabama — William Carey University’s women’s basketball team lost to Faulkner University 90-82 Thursday night inside Tine Davis Gymnasium.
The game started quickly, with both teams trading baskets in a fast-paced first quarter. Morgan Holland DeWitt hit the first three of the game for Carey, but Alyssa Hillard responded immediately with a three for the Crusaders. Addyson Sherer and Brooklyn Cuevas also made long-range shots, helping Carey take a 23-20 lead with two minutes remaining in the period. Faulkner closed the quarter strong at the free-throw line to lead 26-23.
Hillard opened the second quarter with another three to tie the game. Faulkner pushed ahead 35-30 midway through the period. Carey responded with back-to-back threes from Sherer and Charlie Gamberine, pulling within one at 39-38. Leah Sutton tied the game at 40 with a jumper with two minutes remaining before Hillard gave Carey a brief lead with a layup. Faulkner answered with back-to-back threes, carrying a 46-42 advantage into halftime.
The Lady Eagles extended their lead early in the third quarter with a 12-0 run. Bailey Devall ended the drought with a three-pointer. Later in the period, free throws and another Cuevas three trimmed the deficit to 61-56. Despite Carey’s efforts, Faulkner maintained control and led 66-60 entering the final quarter.
The Crusaders opened the fourth quarter with baskets from Shaneal Corpuz and Devall. However, Faulkner responded with a decisive 15-0 run, pushing the lead to 83-64 with five minutes remaining. Carey continued to fight but couldn’t overcome the early deficit, resulting in a 90-82 loss. Corpuz led Carey with 15 points, while Hillard and Sherer each scored 13. Cuevas added 13 points, and Devall contributed 10.
William Carey is scheduled to return to action Saturday, Feb. 14, against Mobile in SSAC play. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m.
