Faulkner Sweeps William Carey in Weekend Baseball Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey baseball lost both games of its weekend series against Faulkner University on Saturday at Milton Wheeler Field. The Eagles took the first game 10-3 and edged the Crusaders 8-7 in the nightcap.

Faulkner broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of game one. Anthory Bassett Torres singled and moved into scoring position on wild pitches before scoring on an RBI single by CJ Robertson. The Eagles added three runs in the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from Carter Schellsmidt, Bassett Torres, and Orlando Arellano. William Carey responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Taylor Walters and an error that allowed another run to score, reducing the deficit to 4-2.

Faulkner scored three more runs in the fifth to lead 7-2. William Carey scored once in the bottom of the inning on a single by Tyler Ducksworth. The Eagles extended their lead in the sixth with a three-run frame and maintained control through the final innings, limiting the Crusaders to two baserunners over the last two innings.

In game two, William Carey opened the scoring with a solo home run from DeeJay Booth in the first inning. Faulkner responded in the second with a three-run homer from Bassett Torres. The Crusaders regained the lead in the third with a four-run inning, including bases-loaded walks and a triple from Taylor Walters that made it 5-3.

Faulkner retook the lead in the fifth with four runs and added another in the sixth to go ahead 8-5. William Carey rallied in the eighth, with Walters doubling and scoring on a sacrifice fly, and Booth driving in a run with an RBI double. However, Faulkner’s bullpen held the lead, and the Eagles secured the win in the ninth after Walters drew a walk with the tying run on base.

The Crusaders are scheduled to return to action Tuesday, March 17, against LSU Alexandria in non-conference play. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
