East Mississippi Sweeps Southwest Mississippi Baseball in Doubleheader
East Mississippi swept a doubleheader against Southwest Mississippi on Saturday, winning 8-2 and 3-1 in Scooba, according to team reports.
In the first game, Southwest pitcher Matt Newman recorded three strikeouts over four innings. Multiple pitchers saw time on the mound for the Bears, but East Mississippi pulled away late. Tristain Haynes led Southwest offensively, going 3-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a stolen base. Drew Swan added two hits, including a double. Hayes Loper and JD Hidalgo each had one hit and stole a base.
The second game was a closer contest, with East Mississippi winning 3-1. Southwest starter Alden Spencer pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run with two strikeouts. Nik Carney finished the game with five strikeouts. Tee Robinson hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1, but the Bears were unable to score again. Both teams finished with four hits in the defensive battle.
The Bears, now 16-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play, are scheduled to host Meridian for a doubleheader Tuesday. Southwest looks to rebound after a tough weekend against East Mississippi, according to team officials.
