Delta State Women’s Basketball Wins Third Straight, Defeats Montevallo 57-49

Weronika Kaczmarska scored a game-high 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Delta State University’s women’s basketball team to a 57-49 win over Montevallo Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Lady Statesmen led wire-to-wire, opening the game with a 10-0 run and maintaining control throughout. They carried a 28-21 lead into halftime and extended the margin to as many as 11 points in the third quarter.

Delta State was paced by a balanced scoring effort, with Dakiya Toney contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Jariyah Williamson, Bramyia Johnson, Madi Kate Vuncannon, and Kennedee Shelton each scored nine points. Olivia Allen and Williamson provided key minutes off the bench.

The Lady Statesmen shot 37.5% from the field, controlled the rebounding battle 40-33, and forced 20 turnovers by Montevallo, converting them into 14 points. They also outscored the Falcons 28-18 in the paint and scored 29 points from their bench.

Delta State sealed the victory at the free-throw line in the final minute. The team will return to action Thursday against UAH in Huntsville, Alabama, with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
