Delta State Sweeps Union in Doubleheader, Extends Winning Streak
JACKSON, Tenn. — Delta State’s baseball team finished a dominant weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Union University on Saturday at Fesmire Field. The Statesmen won Game 1 in 13 innings, 3-2, before rolling to a 12-4 victory in Game 2.
In the opener, Delta State relied on strong pitching and clutch hitting. Right-hander Blake King pitched nine innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Reliever Dawson Muenzenmay threw four scoreless innings to earn the win, striking out three.
The Statesmen scored the tying run in the fifth inning on a single by Tucker Jones and a wild pitch. Both teams remained scoreless through the next seven innings until Delta State broke through in the 13th. Will Tamplain delivered the game-winning RBI in his first career at-bat, singling home Levi Lang. Muenzenmay closed the game, stranding the tying run at third base.
Delta State took control early in the second game, scoring two runs in the first inning without recording a hit, thanks to four walks and a hit-by-pitch. Brady Hendrix hit a solo home run in the second, and the team exploded for six runs in the third, highlighted by RBI hits from Jones, Cade Greer and Lang, along with Union errors.
Catcher Stone Collier led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs. Jones added two hits, two runs, and a sacrifice fly. On the mound, Mason Shropshire earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief, while Aidan McCrady finished with 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing two earned runs. The victory improves Delta State’s record to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in Gulf South Conference play.
The Statesmen will continue non-conference play next week with a road game against Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday.
