Delta State Softball Hosts No. 20 Montevallo for Three-Game Series

The Delta State University softball team will host the University of Montevallo Falcons in a three-game series this weekend. The opening game is set for Thursday at 5 p.m. on University Field. A doubleheader will follow on Friday, starting at noon, featuring games two and three, according to school officials.

Delta State enters the series with a 12-23 overall record and a 6-12 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The Lady Statesmen are led at the plate by Kyleigh Wheaton, who is hitting .416 with 35 RBIs, nine home runs, and serves as a utility player. Carly Dunnigan has contributed a .366 batting average, 27 RBIs, nine doubles, and six home runs. Maeve Lavoy has been effective in the circle, posting a 4.73 ERA over 84.1 innings, striking out 67 batters, the school said.

Montevallo enters the weekend ranked 20th in the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association poll. The Falcons are on a nine-game winning streak, which includes sweeps over Lee and Valdosta State. Becca Benton leads the team with 37 RBIs, a .365 batting average, eight doubles, and 12 home runs. Taylor Rogers is a speed threat, batting .425 with 14 extra-base hits and a perfect 34-for-34 on stolen bases, according to team stats.

The series marks a key matchup for both teams as they continue their conference schedules. The Lady Statesmen aim to improve their standings, while the Falcons look to extend their winning streak and stay ranked nationally.
