Delta State Softball Falls Short Against Christian Brothers
Cleveland, Miss. — The Delta State University softball team lost 4-3 to Christian Brothers on Sunday evening at University Field. The Buccaneers scored three runs in the third inning and added another in the fourth to take an early lead.
Christian Brothers opened the scoring with a three-run third, stringing together four hits and taking advantage of baserunners. The Bucs extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Delta State responded with its best offensive inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases on a walk and a double and pushing across one run on a fielder’s choice. Ally Agner then hit a two-run single to bring the Lady Statesmen within one, making it 4-3.
Maeve Lavoy pitched four scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out five to keep Delta State in the game. The Lady Statesmen threatened again in the seventh when Rylie Leonard drew a leadoff walk, but a sacrifice bunt and two quick outs ended their comeback attempt.
Emily Schooler pitched all seven innings for Christian Brothers, allowing two hits and striking out six. Delta State’s overall record drops to 8–14, with a 4–5 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The Lady Statesmen return to action Tuesday at University Field for a non-conference doubleheader against Arkansas Tech University at 2 p.m. Central time.
