Delta State softball completes historic doubleheader sweep against LeMoyne-Owen
The Delta State University softball team swept LeMoyne-Owen College in a doubleheader Tuesday at University Field. The victory featured a historic moment in the second game, when the Lady Statesmen recorded their first no-hitter since 2021, according to the school.
Delta State opened the day with a 7-0 win. The Lady Statesmen scored four runs in the first inning and added insurance in the third and fourth. Kyleigh Wheaton led the offense with a home run and three RBIs. Mary Teague and Maeve Lavoy each had multiple hits at the top of the lineup. Averi Bridgman pitched a complete game, allowing six hits, striking out 11 and issuing six walks.
The second game was even more dominant, with Delta State winning 10-2 in five innings. The Lady Statesmen scored six runs in the first inning, highlighted by Wheaton’s three-run home run. They added four more runs in the fourth, with key hits from Carly Dunigan and others. Joryie McKnight went 3-for-3, and Dunigan and Wheaton each drove in multiple runs.
The highlight of the second game was the combined no-hitter pitched by Ellie Cox and Kendal Moore. Cox threw three innings without allowing a hit, earning the win, while Moore finished the final two frames. The only runs scored by LeMoyne-Owen were unearned, and the duo worked through five walks to keep the opposition hitless.
Delta State improves to 10-17 overall and will continue Gulf South Conference play later this week against West Alabama, aiming to build on their momentum from the doubleheader sweep.
