Delta State Rallys in Extra Innings to Beat No. 17 Lee 4-3
Delta State University’s baseball team scored in the 10th inning Friday to defeat No. 17 Lee University 4-3 at Larry Carpenter Stadium in Cleveland, Tennessee. The victory marked the Statesmen’s first Gulf South Conference win of the season.
Trailing 3-1 in the ninth, Delta State mounted a late rally. A run-scoring double cut the deficit, and a Lee throwing error allowed the tying run to score, sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Cade Greer led off with a double down the right-field line. He later scored on Dawson Muenzenmay’s RBI single to give Delta State its first lead of the game. Muenzenmay then struck out two batters in the bottom half to finish the game.
Greer finished with two hits and two runs scored. Bo Rock added two hits and an RBI. Muenzenmay, who also earned the win on the mound with two scoreless innings and four strikeouts, delivered the game-winning hit.
Delta State’s starter, Adrian Byrd, pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 11. Alex McHale pitched the eighth and ninth innings before Muenzenmay closed out the game.
With the win, Delta State improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee moved to 6-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. The two teams will continue their series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. (CT).
