Delta State rallies with six-run sixth inning to beat Spring Hill in season opener

Mobile, Ala. — Delta State kicked off the 2026 baseball season with a 9-7 victory over Spring Hill on Friday evening at Sims-Galle Field. The Statesmen improved to 1-0 with a strong sixth inning and solid pitching in the late innings, according to the school.

Spring Hill scored three runs in the first two innings before Delta State responded in the third. Jacob Hill hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the first run for the Statesmen, and Levi Lang followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 3-3.

The game turned in the sixth inning when Delta State scored six runs on five hits. Brady Hendrix delivered a two-run single during the rally, Tucker Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run, and Cade Greer added a two-run single, giving the Statesmen a 9-3 lead. Spring Hill mounted a late charge, with a solo home run in the seventh and a three-run ninth inning, but reliever Dawson Muenzenmay recorded the final out to earn the save, sealing the win.

Adrian Byrd earned the victory for Delta State, striking out eight over five innings while allowing three runs, two earned. At the plate, Greer and Lang each had two hits and two RBIs, and Hendrix drove in two runs as well. The team finished with nine runs on 11 hits, while Spring Hill totaled seven runs on seven hits.

The two teams will face off in a doubleheader tomorrow at Sims-Galle Field, beginning at 1 p.m. Central Time, as Delta State aims for a series win.
