Delta State Men’s Basketball Hosts Mississippi College in Crucial Season Finale

The Delta State University Statesmen men’s basketball team will host Mississippi College in the final game of the regular season Friday at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and the game could determine the Statesmen’s postseason fate, according to the team’s news release.

Both teams have a chance to earn the eight seed in the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament. A win by Delta State combined with a Union loss to Lee would secure the Statesmen a spot in the tournament, which will be held in Livingston, Alabama.

Michael Gross will provide radio coverage and FloCollege broadcast the game on the Statesmen Sports Network. Delta State returns to Sillers Coliseum for the final time this season, aiming to defend its home court in a rivalry game. The team needs a victory and some help from Lee to advance.

Delta State relies on Dacory Porter, who averages 17.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. Porter, a redshirt junior, shoots nearly 50% from the field. Bryce Clayton, a junior guard, provides outside scoring with a 40% three-point shooting percentage and averages 2.8 triples per game.

Mississippi College has struggled on the road but has performed better at home. The Choctaws, who won the first matchup in Clinton, Mississippi, will look for a repeat in Cleveland. Phil Nelson leads the team with 15.7 points per game and handles assists and steals. Avaughn Johnson contributes 14.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, including strong inside play.
