Delta State Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Spring Hill, Takes Series
Mobile, Ala. — The Delta State University baseball team split a doubleheader at Spring Hill College on Saturday, winning the opening game 10-5 before losing the nightcap 5-2. The series victory marks the team’s first series win of the season, bringing their record to 3-1, according to the school.
In Game One, Delta State scored nine runs across the seventh and eighth innings to rally past Spring Hill. The Statesmen trailed 1-0 early but tied the game in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Cade Greer after a single from Austin Estes. Blake King pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts to keep DSU in the game.
The decisive inning came in the seventh when a hit-by-pitch, walk, and an error loaded the bases before a throwing error by Spring Hill allowed Stone Collier to score. Jacob Hill drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Tucker Jones added an RBI single. The eighth inning saw the Statesmen extend their lead with five runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Bo Rock. Colby Lafayette closed the game in the ninth for the save.
Spring Hill responded with late offense in Game Two, capitalizing on early scoring opportunities and two home runs. The Badgers scored two runs in the second and added two more in the third on a homer by Andrew Juez to take a 4-1 lead. Delta State answered in the third with a run scored by Jacob Hill on an RBI single from Cael Allen, then added another in the fourth when Hill drove in Austin Estes after a double.
Spring Hill reliever Garrett Lott earned the save, striking out four over two hitless innings. Senior Mason Shropshire took the loss for Delta State, allowing five runs over four innings. Aidan McCrady pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Looking ahead, Delta State will host Southern Arkansas University in a mid-week game Tuesday at 3 p.m., aiming to continue its early-season success.
