Dalton State ends William Carey’s 14-game winning streak with 100-82 victory

Dalton, Georgia — William Carey’s 14-game winning streak ended Saturday afternoon with a 100-82 loss to Dalton State. The Crusaders started strong, with intense defensive pressure that forced five early turnovers and led to quick points.

Makeem Roberts scored the first point for WCU from the free-throw line and added two more free throws as the Crusaders built a 14-6 lead five minutes into the game. They maintained their advantage for much of the first half, though Dalton State stayed within striking distance.

With William Carey ahead 35-31, the Roadrunners responded with a 9-2 run to take the lead. Jamar Jenkins immediately answered with a three-pointer and a jumper after forcing a turnover, swinging the lead back to the Crusaders. Malik Franklin hit a jumper in the closing seconds of the half, giving William Carey a 44-43 edge at halftime.

The second half was a back-and-forth contest, with neither team leading by more than two points until Dalton State surged ahead, 58-52, with 14 minutes remaining. The Crusaders responded with six straight points from Troy Dunn and Franklin to tie the game, but Dalton State regained control.

Midway through the half, Miles Ceballos hit a three to extend the Roadrunners’ lead to 66-61, then added another from deep at the seven-minute mark to push the margin to 73-64. Dalton State continued to pull away down the stretch.

Malik Franklin led William Carey with 26 points, while Makeem Roberts scored 19. Troy Dunn finished with 11 points, and Randal Hughes grabbed 10 rebounds. The Crusaders return to action Thursday, hosting Thomas University at Clinton Gym. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
