Coastal Carolina beats Southern Miss 81-55 in women’s basketball

Coastal Carolina improved to 10-11 overall and 3-6 in Sun Belt play with an 81-55 victory over Southern Miss on Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum.

The Chanticleers scored 33 points off 18 Lady Eagles turnovers, which contributed significantly to their win. Coastal Carolina jumped out to an early lead, ending the first quarter with a 20-10 advantage. They extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Southern Miss 18-12 and taking a 38-22 lead into halftime.

Southern Miss struggled offensively in the first half, shooting 25 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from three-point range. Whitney Hart led the Lady Eagles with 15 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. Hayleigh Breland and Carly Keats scored 14 points each, while Hart’s rebounding effort was notable.

In the third quarter, Coastal Carolina increased its lead, outscoring Southern Miss 21-10 and ending the quarter with a 59-32 advantage. The Chanticleers’ defense stifled the Lady Eagles, limiting them to just three field goals in the period.

Southern Miss made some progress in the fourth quarter, hitting three three-pointers early in the period. Despite trimming the deficit to 19 points late in the game, Coastal Carolina maintained control and finished with its largest lead of the day.

Tracey Hueston led Coastal Carolina with 24 points. The Lady Eagles will next travel to Georgia Southern for a game Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET.
