Carey Softball Splits Doubleheader at Abraham Baldwin in Georgia
The Carey softball team earned a split in Saturday’s doubleheader at Abraham Baldwin in Tifton, Georgia. The Lady Crusaders won the first game 10-0 before dropping the second game 2-1, according to team reports.
In the opening game, Carey set the tone early. Jayden Sawyer hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Lady Crusaders a 1-0 lead. The team added to its lead in the fourth when Kasia Rodriguez drove in Lily Bittle with an RBI single. Carey broke the game open in the fifth, with Albanie Fussell driving in a run and Sawyer launching a two-run homer to extend the lead to 5-0. The Lady Crusaders scored five more runs in the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate. Liz Cross opened the rally with an RBI single, Caroline Lindsey added a two-run double, and Julia Shaw capped the inning with a two-run single. Sawyer finished with two home runs and three RBIs. The team totaled 15 hits in the game, with Sawyer dominating on the mound, allowing just one hit and stranding multiple runners.
In the second game, both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings. Abraham Baldwin created pressure in the second, but Carey escaped the jam. The Phillies scored the first run in the third on an RBI single by Kinley Snider. Carey tied the game in the sixth when Liz Cross scored on a wild pitch. Abraham Baldwin responded immediately, scoring the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Lindsey Paul in the bottom half. The Phillies held Carey scoreless in the seventh to secure the 2-1 victory, according to sources.
Carey is scheduled to return to action on March 20, facing Thomas University in a doubleheader at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m., sources said.
