Bobcats rally late to split doubleheader at No. 1 East Central
DECATUR — Jones University’s baseball team nearly was run-ruled in the first game of a doubleheader against top-ranked East Central but rallied late to make it competitive. The Bobcats scored six runs over the final three innings and won the second game 13-2, outscoring East Central 19-2 over the final 10 innings of the twin bill, according to coach reports.
Jones, which averages 13.5 runs per game, was limited to just two runs in the second game by pitchers Brayson Graham and Trevor Hodges. The Bobcats are scheduled to return home for a game against No. 3 Pearl River on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
In the first game, East Central edged Jones 12-9. Mason Hickman hit a solo home run in the first inning to give EC an early lead. Jones tied the game at 2-2 in the third on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball. Chase Russell’s RBI single in the fourth put the Bobcats ahead, 3-2.
East Central responded with a two-run double by Sawyer Bates and a two-run homer by Ryan Nelson, pushing their lead to 9-3 in the fifth. Jones made a late push, scoring six runs in the final three frames, but fell short.
Jones’s Drew Lambert kept East Central scoreless in the seventh, helping the Bobcats mount their comeback in the opener.
