Blackburn edges Mississippi University for Women 59-58 in SLIAC basketball
Columbus, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Women men’s basketball team lost to Blackburn College 59-58 in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Thursday night.
The Owls (10-10, 6-5 SLIAC) failed to find their rhythm in the game, which was close throughout. Neither team led by more than a single digit, and MUW struggled offensively, shooting just 39 percent from the field compared to nearly 53 percent entering the game.
Despite their offensive struggles, the Owls led 37-32 at halftime. However, Blackburn outscored MUW 27-21 in the second half to secure the win. The Owls’ 58 points fell well below their season average of 85.2 points per game.
Blackburn’s defense limited MUW sophomore Tray Huguley, the SLIAC’s second-leading scorer, to 13 points on 3-of-10 shooting. Huguley also contributed 16 rebounds, marking his 12th double-double of the season and extending his school record. He has scored in double figures in all 18 games this season.
Devin McClaine led MUW with 15 points, while Joe Haze Austin added 11, including five rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Tyler Shephard scored nine points with eight rebounds, and Trent Walker contributed eight points and seven rebounds. MUW will try to end a four-game conference losing streak Saturday when it hosts Eureka College at Pohl Gym.
