Belhaven Tennis Teams Fall to Piedmont in Conference Opener
The Belhaven men’s and women’s tennis teams opened their Collegiate Conference of the South seasons Friday with 7-0 losses at Piedmont.
The men’s team was competitive in doubles, especially at No. 1, where Jesus Diaz and Josiah Leggett narrowly lost 7-6. Piedmont secured the doubles point with wins at all three doubles positions and carried the momentum into singles play.
Harshith Anugonda put forth a strong effort at No. 1 singles, winning the first set 7-5 before falling in straight sets. Briley Oakes and Stephen Spencer also competed at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively. Spencer has been one of Belhaven’s most consistent performers this season, with five singles wins. Piedmont swept all six singles matches to complete the sweep and hand the Blazers their first conference loss.
The women’s team also fell 7-0, with Piedmont winning all three doubles matches. Millie Gallarno and Evey Moore played at No. 1 doubles, while Rebekah Nichols and Arica Eason competed at No. 2. In singles, Nichols pushed her match to a tiebreak in the second set at No. 2 before losing 7-6. Moore also played at No. 3, and Eason faced a tough matchup at No. 4. Piedmont took the remaining singles points to finish the sweep.
Belhaven remains winless at 0-13 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Despite the results, the team continues to develop against strong competition, including matches earlier this season against regionally-ranked opponents. The women’s team will play next at Agnes Scott on Saturday at 11 a.m., while the men’s team will face Huntingdon on Thursday at 1 p.m.
