Belhaven Softball Sweeps Agnes Scott in CCS Opener
The Belhaven University softball team started Collegiate Conference of the South play with a pair of dominant wins over Agnes Scott on Friday at Oakhurst Field in Decatur, Georgia.
The Blazers won game one 17-0 via run rule after five innings, then completed the sweep with an 8-0 shutout in game two. Belhaven combined for 25 runs on 26 hits across the two games, while limiting Agnes Scott to just eight hits, according to school officials.
In game one, Belhaven exploded for 16 runs in the second inning. The rally included a bases-loaded walk, a two-run single from Grace Langston, an RBI double from Melissa Lopera, and a three-run homer from Reagan Bryan. Kaleigh Steverson added a two-run homer, and Ellie Williamson delivered a two-run double as the Blazers scored 16 runs on 10 hits in that inning alone.
Pitching was equally strong. Karley Rouse allowed two hits over three innings, striking out four and working out of a second-inning jam. AR Sharp pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game, with the team securing the shutout.
Belhaven added its final run in the fifth inning when Rouse singled in a run. The team finished with 15 hits, led by Langston’s four RBIs and Bryan’s three RBIs. Lopera and Bryan each had multiple hits, fueling the offensive effort.
In game two, Belhaven continued its offensive assault, with Maryanna Guy driving in Reagan Bryan, who tripled to start the game, giving the Blazers an early 1-0 lead. The team extended its lead in the third inning and added additional runs in the fifth, including a solo home run from Lauren Dunbar in the sixth.
Gracey Harbour pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out four, to earn the win. Macy Funderburk finished the game with 2.2 scoreless innings, combining with Harbour to hold Agnes Scott to three hits and strike out eight batters.
Langston led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance and two runs scored, while Guy added three hits and an RBI. Bryan scored three times and hit a triple. Belhaven improved to 18-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The team continues its Georgia road trip Saturday with a doubleheader at Wesleyan, scheduled for 11 a.m.
