Belhaven Men’s Tennis Earns First Win of Season Against Principia

The Belhaven men’s tennis team defeated Principia College 4-3 Wednesday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, claiming its first win of the season. The Blazers lost the No. 1 doubles match but responded strongly across the remaining courts to take the doubles point.

Harshith Anugonda and Briley Oakes won at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, while Stephen Spencer and Paul Stager secured a 6-1 victory at No. 3. In singles play, Spencer remained undefeated in early-season singles matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4. Oakes added a point at No. 5 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory, and Jack Madden clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.

The top singles matches were competitive, including a three-set battle at No. 1 where Anugonda forced a super tiebreak before falling 10-8. Despite losing at Nos. 1 through 3, Belhaven’s depth helped secure the program’s first victory of the spring.

In women’s action, Belhaven dropped a 7-0 decision to Principia. The Blazers lost all three doubles matches to start, then showed resilience in singles, with Arica Eason pushing No. 4 into a third-set super tiebreak. Eason narrowly lost 11-9 after taking the first set 7-5. Rebekah Nichols and Evey Moore also competed at the top of the lineup, but Principia won all remaining matches in straight sets to complete the sweep.

Belhaven women’s tennis is scheduled to host East Texas Baptist on Friday at 1 p.m. For updates on Belhaven athletics, follow @BelhavenBlazers on X and Instagram, and like the team on Facebook. Supporters can also contribute through Team Green Giving.
