Belhaven Men’s Basketball Falls to Maryville Despite Career Night from Robinson
Maryville, Tenn. — Belhaven University’s men’s basketball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped Saturday night with a 92-76 defeat on the road against Maryville. Dan Robinson scored a career-high 32 points for the Blazers, but early separation by the Scots and key second-half runs proved decisive, according to the team.
The game started at a fast pace, with Belhaven responding to an early Maryville basket with scores from Robinson and Dyllion Redmond to briefly take the lead. Robinson attacked the paint early and contributed multiple baskets, keeping the score close through the opening minutes. However, midway through the first half, Maryville used a quick scoring run fueled by a transition three from Jackson Garner and second-chance finishes from Chase Morgan to create separation.
Robinson tied the game at 11-11, but the Scots pushed the lead to two possessions. Belhaven continued to compete, with interior finishes from Neal Terry and a strong drive from Robinson, but struggled to slow Maryville’s offensive rebounding and free-throw opportunities. The Scots closed the half on a run, with Matthew Schneider scoring and Jamal Ware hitting free throws to give Maryville a 46-30 advantage at halftime.
Out of the break, Belhaven responded quickly. Robinson knocked down a three on the opening possession and scored on three consecutive drives to cut the deficit to eight. Terry added a basket, and Robinson continued to carry the offense, helping the Blazers trim the lead further to 54-47 with under 10 minutes remaining. A brief surge by Belhaven, including a three from Benjamin Stewart and a drive from CJ Minton, brought the score to 54-47.
The Scots answered with back-to-back baskets from Morgan and a transition three from Jaylon Green, pushing the lead back to double digits. Despite battling and scoring on several possessions, including a three from Braylon Dame, Belhaven couldn’t overcome the early deficit. Maryville maintained its lead with key baskets down the stretch, sealing the 92-76 victory.
The Blazers shot 47.6% from the field and matched Maryville in the second half, but turnovers and second-chance points in the first half created a gap that proved difficult to close. Belhaven now prepares for a rematch at LaGrange on Monday at 6 p.m.
