Belhaven beats Mississippi University for Women 5-1 in season opener
PEARL, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Women baseball team lost its season opener 5-1 to Belhaven University at Trustmark Park. The Owls are now 2-2, while the Blazers are 1-0.
MUW starter Chris Ellis took the loss, giving up two runs in two innings, allowing three hits and a walk. He was followed by reliever JB Crumpton, who made his debut and also pitched two innings, permitting one earned run and two hits. Belhaven led 3-0 after three innings and maintained that lead until the seventh.
Senior right-hander Josh Mackey threw two scoreless innings, helping to keep the Owls within reach. Will Carter pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs in the seventh. Despite the deficit, MUW had a chance in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Chase Marshall drew a leadoff walk, Zach Johnson singled, and Bryson Barnes walked, but the team was unable to capitalize after three straight outs.
The Owls’ only run came in the ninth on a solo home run by Barnes, his first of the season and the team’s first of the year. The team’s Nos. 2-5 hitters combined for five of the six hits, with senior designated hitter Baron Brack going 2-for-4 with a double. Marshall extended his hitting streak to four games with a double in the first inning.
MUW is scheduled to play three games this weekend at the LaGrange College Tournament, beginning with a game against Endicott College on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Central time.
