Belhaven Athletes of the Week: Owen Abney and Kaleigh Steverson
Jackson, Mississippi — Owen Abney of Belhaven University’s baseball team and Kaleigh Steverson of the softball team have been named the C Spire Athletes of the Week, the school announced Monday. The honors follow their strong performances from last Wednesday through Tuesday.
Abney, a senior second baseman from Madison, Mississippi, went 9-for-16 (.563) in four games. He scored five runs, recorded four extra-base hits, drove in six RBIs, and stole a base. His efforts helped the Blazers extend their unbeaten streak to 12-0.
Steverson, a junior first baseman from Canton, Mississippi, batted .524 (11-for-21) in six games. She contributed with a hit in each contest, scored five runs, and hit two home runs. Her performance helped the Blazers achieve a 4-2 record at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Belhaven’s baseball team is scheduled to play at Methodist in North Carolina today at 3 p.m., while the softball team continues its spring trip with games in Florida later today, the school said. Abney is listed as a 5-foot-11 infielder, while Steverson is a 5-foot-10 first baseman and catcher. Both are juniors, with Abney batting right-handed and Steverson batting left-handed.
