Belhaven Alumni Phil Moyer Reflects on Soccer Career and Memories
Phil Moyer chose Belhaven University for its strong soccer reputation and personal connections. He credits two former club coaches, Pat Fitzgerald and Mickey Plott, for encouraging him to consider the school. Moyer also mentions his friend James Dinsmore, who played at Belhaven and spoke highly of the program. Moyer was drawn to the school after its NAIA National Championship win the previous year, and he is grateful to coach Peter Fuller for introducing him to Belhaven’s soccer culture.
During his time at Belhaven, Moyer recalls several memorable moments. His first preseason at Berry College in Georgia left a lasting impression, as he was in awe of the talent on the 1993 team. He also highlights game-day experiences at the Belhaven Bowl, describing the excitement of walking down the hill amid a packed crowd and lively music.
Moyer’s competitive highlights include the 1993 national championship run, where the team fell short in the semifinals but had an unforgettable season. He also recounts a 1994 road trip that elevated Belhaven from ranked eighth to first nationally, despite the foggy memory of specific goals scored during the journey. As a coach, Moyer values mentoring players and working alongside Belhaven’s coaching staff, creating lasting memories off the field.
He admits to missing the camaraderie and daily training with teammates, describing it as a form of “iron sharpening iron.” Moyer also fondly remembers the cafeteria staff, noting their kindness and care for the campus community. Today, he remains involved in soccer through coaching his sons, one of whom plays at Mississippi College, and through local leagues. Moyer helped establish a soccer club in Huntsville, Alabama, in 2007 and occasionally participates in Sunday league games.
Moyer praises several outstanding players from his era, particularly Craig Demmin and Sheldon Bennett, both of whom he regards as some of the best to have played at Belhaven. He describes Demmin as a professional and a great leader, while Bennett is recognized for his exceptional ball skills. Moyer’s experiences reflect a lifelong passion for the sport and his appreciation for the memories made at Belhaven.
