Avaughn Johnson scores 26 points as Mississippi College falls to Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mississippi College lost to Trevecca Nazarene 89-82 Thursday night at Trojan Fieldhouse. The Choctaws led by three at halftime but were outscored 54-44 in the second half.

Mississippi College opened the game strong, with Judah Land hitting a jumper assisted by Phil Nelson at the 19:32 mark. Trevecca Nazarene responded quickly, with Jax Abernathy sinking a three-pointer assisted by Fred Bailey. The Choctaws maintained their lead through a scoring run that included a three from Avaughn Johnson at 15:57, extending their advantage to 10-8.

As the first half wound down, Cade Capps hit a fast-break three with 19 seconds remaining, giving Trevecca Nazarene a 38-35 lead at the break. Johnson opened the second half with a three-pointer, but Trevecca responded with a 7-0 run, featuring a three from Brett Wright and a layup and three from Abernathy, shifting the momentum.

Despite Johnson’s continued scoring, including a three at 5:43 to narrow the gap, Trevecca Nazarene’s offense took control. Bailey’s layup at 3:34 helped seal the victory for the Trojans. Trevecca Nazarene outscored Mississippi College 54-44 in the second half.

Johnson led the Choctaws with 26 points on 9-for-13 shooting, including five three-pointers. Phil Nelson added 21 points and six assists, while Josh Holman scored 11. DeMarcus Powe contributed eight points and six rebounds. Judah Land scored nine points on perfect shooting from the field.

The Blue and Gold will travel to face Lee on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Cleveland, Tennessee.
