Alcorn Women’s Basketball Heads on Critical Road Trip in Texas

Alcorn State Women’s Basketball embarks on a significant road trip this week, traveling to Texas to face Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M. The Braves aim to maintain their position in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings amid a busy stretch of games.

The team begins Thursday in Houston, facing Texas Southern at the Health & Physical Education Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. The following game will be Saturday against Prairie View A&M in Prairie View, Texas, at the William J. Nicks Building, starting at 2 p.m., according to the school.

Alcorn enters the trip holding the second spot in the SWAC, with an 11-3 conference record and a 14-11 overall mark, still vying for the top seed in the upcoming tournament. The team recently lost to Jackson State but has recorded the most wins at this point since the 2006-07 season, according to school officials.

In Texas, Alcorn faces a Texas Southern team that is 9-18 overall and 5-10 in the SWAC. The Tigers have lost their last six games and lead the conference with an average of 65.7 points per game. Sophomore guard Taliyah Logwood and graduate student Daeja Holmes are the primary offensive threats for Texas Southern, averaging 13.6 and 13.5 points per game, respectively.

The Braves will also visit Prairie View A&M, which holds an 18-15 overall record and is 0-15 in SWAC play. Despite struggles, the Panthers feature top scorers Crystal Schultz and CJ Wilson, averaging 14.8 and 14.1 points per game. Prairie View is seeking its first victory over a Division I opponent this season.

Alcorn has won its last three meetings against Texas Southern, including a 66-51 win in January, and has taken two of the last four games against Prairie View. The team aims to continue its success and stay competitive heading into the final stretch of the season.

The Braves return home after this trip to host Mississippi Valley State on March 3 and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on March 5 at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Fans can follow updates on social media via @BravesSports on X and @AlcornSports on Instagram.
