Alcorn State Women’s Basketball Wins Sixth Straight, Edges Grambling 61-58
ALCORN, Miss. — Alcorn State women’s basketball continued its strong season Monday night, rallying past Grambling State for a 61-58 victory at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. The win marked the Lady Braves’ sixth straight and moved them to 8-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The game was a battle of resilience. Grambling jumped out to a strong first quarter, taking a 33-30 lead into halftime. The Tigers maintained control early but faced a renewed Alcorn State in the second half. The Lady Braves responded with a dominant third quarter, outscoring Grambling 20-6 to seize momentum.
Junior guard Nakia Cheatham led the way for Alcorn State, finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Her performance helped control the tempo and spark the decisive run. Kiarra Henderson added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Maya Claytor contributed 10 points, including three key three-pointers.
Alcorn State’s defense was critical down the stretch, forcing turnovers and limiting Grambling to 31.9% shooting from the field. The Lady Braves’ bench also played a vital role, outscoring Grambling 19-8 and providing energy during key stretches. Grambling’s Monica Marsh scored a game-high 19 points, with Shaniah Nunn adding 16, but the Tigers could not overcome the deficit.
Alcorn State improved to 11-9 overall and remains a top contender in SWAC play. The Lady Braves will next face Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday, Feb. 5, on the road.
