Alcorn State University’s track and field team will compete Saturday at the Mississippi College Spring Classic at James E. Parkman Track in Clinton, Mississippi. Head coach Alonzo Banks said the meet is a chance for athletes to shake off indoor rust and get focused for the outdoor season, which features numerous competitions leading to the conference championship.
Several Braves athletes will participate, with many competing in events outside their usual disciplines. Banks emphasized the importance of this early meet, stating it helps establish the team’s identity and build confidence. He noted the proximity of the meet offers a familiar environment, reducing travel fatigue and allowing athletes to perform at their best.
“This meet is about more than just results,” Banks said. “It’s about getting our feet under us and establishing our identity early. The outdoor season is a grind, and there are many meets ahead. Building good habits from the start is essential.”
The meet at James E. Parkman Track marks the beginning of the outdoor campaign for the Braves. The facility, added in 2006, boasts an eight-lane track, multiple jumping and throwing areas, and a steeplechase course. Mississippi College, which hosts the event, has one of the largest football stadiums in Division II, with a capacity of 8,500 fans.
