Alcorn State Track & Field Heads to Birmingham for Green and Gold Invitational

Alcorn State University’s men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete at the Green and Gold Invitational this weekend at the Birmingham CrossPlex, UAB’s indoor track facility, according to a team release. The meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with the first events starting at 8:45 a.m.

Participating teams include UAB, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Memphis, Mercer, Southeastern Louisiana, Samford, Southern Miss, Tennessee Tech, Troy, among others, the release said.

Head coach Tonya Banks expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming competition. “I’m very excited for our men and women to compete this weekend at the Gold and Green Invitational,” she said. Banks added that back-to-back weekends of competition help with team rhythm and preparation for the Southwestern Athletic Conference indoor championships. She also praised the Birmingham CrossPlex as a top venue and noted the strong Southeast presence of teams this weekend as beneficial for team growth.

Last year, the Alcorn track teams made a strong showing at the UAB Vulcan Invitational, with standout performances from Derrick Williams, Trellas Forrest, Alocias Kipngetich, and others. Williams finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.44 seconds, while Forrest earned a runner-up spot in the 400 meters at 47.52 seconds. The women’s team was led by T’La Dewitt, who finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.18 seconds.

Media attending the meet are advised that only credit cards will be accepted at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Fans can follow Alcorn State Athletics updates on Twitter (@BravesSports), Instagram (@AlcornSports), and YouTube (Braves Sports Network).
