Alcorn State Softball Heads to Louisiana Tech for Midweek Matchup

Alcorn State softball will travel to Ruston, Louisiana, to face Louisiana Tech in a midweek contest Tuesday at 6 p.m. The game will be held at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field. The matchup marks a rare meeting between the two programs, with Louisiana Tech holding a 17-1 series lead, and their last encounter dating back to 2016, according to team records.

The Braves’ last game was affected by weather, with a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff cut short. They lost 13-4 in the first game, which was halted in the seventh inning due to severe weather. The second game was suspended with the Braves leading 5-3 in the top of the seventh. Resumption details have yet to be announced.

Alcorn’s Chiara Olison leads the team with a .382 batting average. Rajayla McBride follows closely at .378. The team is batting .304 overall, with opponents hitting at a .323 clip. The Braves have hit 10 home runs this season, led by Yahnya Acevedo with three. Paris Thompson has two homers, and Olison has a team-high six wins as a pitcher, with 17 strikeouts.

Louisiana Tech, with a 13-10 record, is coached by Josh Taylor in his sixth season. The Bulldogs rank in various offensive categories, including a .308 team batting average and a .447 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff has a 4.20 ERA, with opponents batting .281 against them.

Coach Billie noted the challenge of facing Louisiana Tech, emphasizing the importance of discipline, defense, and execution. He said, “Louisiana Tech is a very solid program, especially at home. They’re well-coached, they play hard, and they’re going to challenge us in every phase of the game.”

Alcorn’s last game was a loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, with standout performances from Kamea Seunarine and Janiah Wilson, who combined for six hits. The team heads into the game against Louisiana Tech looking to improve on their road record, which stands at 0-4 this season.
