Alcorn State Looks to Build on Momentum Against Alabama State
ALCORN, Miss. — Fresh off a 64-62 victory at Alabama A&M, the Alcorn State men’s basketball team heads to Montgomery to face Alabama State on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
The win marked a milestone for the program, as it was the first conference victory for head coach Jake Morton. It also ended a stretch of close SWAC battles, giving the team renewed energy as league play continues. The Braves were led by their backcourt depth and timely execution late in the game, qualities that have defined much of their offensive effort this season.
Shane Lancaster leads the team with an average of 11.4 points per game and shoots 52.5% from the field and 57.7% from three-point range. Davian Williams adds scoring punch with an average of 8.6 points and has knocked down 20 three-pointers this season. In the frontcourt, Tycen McDaniels contributes 8.9 points and a team-high 4.1 rebounds per game, while Nick Woodard averages 8.1 points and four rebounds. Jameel Morris, a key facilitator and perimeter defender, averages 9 points and leads the team with assists.
As a team, Alcorn averages 65.3 points per game and shoots 41.4% from the field, including 37.4% from beyond the arc. The team has relied on ball movement and perimeter shooting to stay competitive through a challenging nonconference schedule and aims to carry that approach into SWAC play. The upcoming game provides an opportunity to turn early-season lessons into conference success.
With confidence growing, the Braves hope to secure back-to-back league wins and continue building under Morton’s first season as head coach.
